Vijayadashami or Dussehra is among the favorite festivals of India. It is welcomed with a lot of enthusiasm across the nation as people dance to it signifying the triumph of light over the demonic forces. The festival just a message that good will always overcome the evil power, as displayed on the day of victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana.
Dussehra is not only a festival where religious performances are carried out but is also a festival of gatherings of families and communities. Ramnavmi is always celebrated with joy in many regions of India, large fairs of ram leelas are conducted in which the incidents of lord Rama’s life are portrayed and put into stage. These plays culminate in the public burning of colossal structures and images of ‘Ravana’; as these structures burn there is victory in the hearts – people clapping as good triumphs over evil once again.
While the cities in the northern part of India celebrate Dussehra by enacting Ram Leela and bursting fireworks, people in the southern part of India especially Mysore do it royally. It is exported that thousands of lights in Mysore Palace for the lighting festival, another festival for which is carried out with decorated elephants, dancers, plus music performances in the streets. Everyone can see it and a lot of people come from near and far in order to drown their sordid.
In West Bengal Dussehra is also known as Durga Puja. The emphasis is laid here on the aspect of Goddess Durga and her triumph over the demon named Mahishasura. Spectacular replicas of the goddess in ornate pandals are established and a number of devotees offer prayers, sing, dance and partake food offered to the deity. On the last day, the idols are brought to the river to immerse and thus bidding goodbye to the fun and frolic festival but, leaving behind happiness and aspiration of the upcoming year with the hearts.
Dussehra is a festival that teaches us an important lesson regardless of how oppressed things may look, there is always brightness that always triumphs the darkness. Whether we celebrate it by burning the Ravana’s clay-made model or by submerging the idol of Goddess Durga in water or river, we are once again warned about the strength of ‘good’, ‘faith and ‘courage’. Overall, its a new year and every person-faces new year with blank slate meaning there is no room for negativity.
It’s also start the festive season in India as well as we all know that Dussehra has been celebrated in all over India. It is also a time when most families start in the preparations of Diwali by cleaning the house, buying new clothes to wear during diwali and arranging to light up the house with lights and diyas.
